About

The History and Traditions of the Alpha Delta Phi

The Alpha Delta Phi was founded by Samuel Eells in 1832 at Hamilton College in New York. Today the Fraternity is comprised of 28 Chapters in the United States and Canada at only the finest universities and colleges. Among our alumni are numerous congressmen, four Supreme Court Justices (Salmon P. Chase, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Harlan Fiske Stone, and Henry B. Brown) and two Presidents of the United States (Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt).

The Alpha Delta Phi came to the University of California, Berkeley in 1908 with the help of Alumni Brother Benjamin Ide Wheeler. Two of the founding brothers include two of the men who originally stole the Stanford Axe (Clinton Miller and A.J. Cloud). Our alumni family also includes men of the Sproul and Haas family.

Today, the California Chapter takes pride in our rich heritage, close brotherhood and active alumni network. For more information, please send us an email or stop by the Alpha Delta Phi Mansion at 2422 Prospect. We look forward to meeting you.
